In 1912, London, England seventeen-year-old Hillary Dearborn finds herself pregnant, unmarried, and expelled by an elite boarding school. To hide the disgrace, she is shipped to America to live with cousins she barely knows.
Her young son Ned thrives until the day his mother agrees to abandon her eleven year child with her cousins in order to marry. Ned goes into a downward spiral and, by high school he uses alcohol and violence to cope.
Finally Ned sees a positive way forward when he marries the love of his life and starts a promising career in the Navy as an officer. Soon after, WWII breaks out and he proudly serves his country, but his battleship experiences leave him more dependent than ever on alcohol. Years later, with the wars ending the military make cutbacks and after thirty years of service, Ned is tossed unprepared into civilian life.
With the pressures of having to provide for his family and the unresolved hatred for his mother, Ned relies on alcohol to escape, and becomes abusive to his family. As his wife and son turn away from him, Ned must find the grace to forgive his mother and thus begin his own path to recovery.
