First Time Trying VR? Here’s What to Expect at Skull & Books VR

If you’ve never tried virtual reality before, you’re definitely not alone.

At Skull & Books VR in Cocoa Beach, many of the people who walk through our doors are putting on a VR headset for the very first time. Some are excited. Some are a little nervous. And plenty tell us right away:

“I’m not really a gamer.”

That’s completely fine.

You don’t need to own a gaming system, understand complicated controls, or know anything about virtual reality before you arrive. We’ll help you get started and find an experience that fits what you’re looking for.

Here’s what you can expect during your first visit.

What Is Virtual Reality Actually Like?

Virtual reality puts you inside the game instead of having you watch the action on a television or computer screen.

Once you put on the headset, the room around you is replaced by a virtual world. Depending on the experience you choose, you might be exploring a fantasy world, battling enemies, solving puzzles, competing in a game, or working together with your group to escape an adventure.

You’ll be able to look around and interact with the virtual environment using your headset and controllers.

And yes, to everyone watching you from outside the headset, you might look a little ridiculous.

That’s part of the fun.

Do I Need to Know How to Play Video Games?

Nope.

One of the biggest misconceptions about VR is that you need to be a gamer to enjoy it.

Many of our guests have little or no gaming experience. Our staff will help you get comfortable with the equipment, explain the controls, and get you started.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

That makes VR a fun option for families, couples, groups of friends, and visitors looking for something different to do in Cocoa Beach, not just experienced gamers.

What Should I Try for My First VR Experience?

If you’re curious about VR but aren't ready to commit to a longer session, our $10 VR Sampler is a great place to start.

It gives you a chance to put on the headset, experience virtual reality for yourself, and see what you think without making a big commitment.

If you already know you're ready for a bigger adventure, you can choose one of our longer VR experiences instead.

We have a variety of games and experiences available, and we're happy to help first-time players choose something based on their interests.

What About a VR Escape Room?

If you're visiting with friends or family, a VR escape room is another great way to experience virtual reality.

Instead of being locked inside a physical room, your group enters a virtual world where you'll explore, solve puzzles, communicate, and work together to complete your adventure.

Our VR escape rooms are private for your group, and you don't need previous VR or escape-room experience to play.

It's a completely different way to experience an escape room, and because everything happens in VR, your adventure can take you places a traditional escape room simply can't.

Is VR Good for Families?

Absolutely.

VR can be especially fun for families because everyone gets to experience something new together. Parents frequently come in expecting to simply watch their kids play and end up deciding to try it themselves.

We can help your group find experiences that work for different interests and experience levels.

VR also gives families visiting Cocoa Beach another option when they want a break from the beach, need something to do on a rainy afternoon, or simply want to spend an hour doing something completely different together.

What If I Feel Nervous About Trying VR?

That's normal too.

Trying VR for the first time can feel strange because your brain is seeing an entirely different environment while you know you're still standing inside our VR arena.

There's no pressure to immediately jump into something intense.

Tell us that it's your first time, and we'll help you get comfortable, explain what to expect, and find an experience that makes sense for you.

That's one of the reasons we offer the $10 Sampler in the first place.

More Than Just VR

Of course, Skull & Books VR is a little unusual.

We're not just a VR arcade.

We're also an independent used bookstore, so before or after your adventure, you can browse our shelves and see what you discover.

It's part bookstore, part virtual reality adventure, and definitely not something you're going to find on every corner in Cocoa Beach.

Ready to Try VR in Cocoa Beach?

If you've been curious about virtual reality but haven't tried it yet, you don't need to know anything before walking through our doors.

We'll take care of that part.

Bring your family, your friends, your date, or just your curiosity, and we'll help you choose your first adventure.
